Warm-up routines that prevent gym injuries

Athlete warming up and stretching before lifting

Why warm-ups matter

Cold tissue is less elastic. A short warm-up raises temperature, lubricates joints, and dials in focus before heavy sets.

Skipping warm-ups to “save time” often costs weeks when a tweak becomes a layoff.

Dynamic warm-up

A simple 8-minute template

  1. Easy cardio — 2 minutes bike, row, or brisk walk.
  2. Dynamic mobility — hips, shoulders, thoracic spine.
  3. Activation — glute bridges, dead bugs, band pull-aparts.
  4. Ramp sets — empty bar or light loads for the first lift.

Movement-specific prep

  • Squats: bodyweight squats and hip openers.
  • Presses: arm circles and scapular work.
  • Hinges: hip airplanes and light RDLs.
  • Pulls: band rows and controlled hang or scap pull-ups if appropriate.

What to skip before heavy lifting

Long static stretches can reduce acute power for some lifts. Save longer holds for after training or dedicated mobility sessions.

Protect the streak by protecting your body. Warm-ups are insurance with a tiny premium.

Quick checklist

  • Keep the plan simple enough for your worst busy day.
  • Review progress weekly, not hourly.
  • Ask for coaching help when form feels unclear.
  • Celebrate completed sessions, not only perfect ones.

Small, repeatable actions beat dramatic restarts.
