Deload weeks: when and how to recover

Athlete using recovery tools after hard training

Fatigue is a feature—until it isn’t

Hard training accumulates fatigue. Deloads clear it before form, joints, and mood break.

Skipping deloads feels productive for a while. Then progress stalls and niggles multiply.

Active recovery work

When to deload

  • Every 4–8 weeks of hard training, or
  • When sleep, joints, and motivation all dip together.
  • After a block of PRs, travel stress, or illness.
  • When small pains start chaining together.

How to deload without losing the habit

Reduce load or volume by roughly 40–60% for 5–7 days. Keep moving. Keep showing up. Practice technique.

A deload is not quitting. It is strategy that makes the next hard block possible.

Quick checklist

  • Keep the plan simple enough for your worst busy day.
  • Review progress weekly, not hourly.
  • Ask for coaching help when form feels unclear.
  • Celebrate completed sessions, not only perfect ones.

Small, repeatable actions beat dramatic restarts.
